ART281 was organized by members of San Antonio Glass Art Guild SAGAG who volunteered their time and skills toward the success of this event.

One such member, Denise Lietka, put her graphic designs skills toward helping on several occasions. Denise is the artist behind the development of both the SAGAG and ART281 logo designs. You see these images on banners, websites, forms and literature. She has done a fabulous job and we are truly grateful. Thank you Denise for this and the many other contributions you made to this event.

Participating Artist - Nicole Vachier Lozano

A native of Texas, Nicole Vachier Lozano was raised in San Antonio, and graduated from Our Lady of the Lake University. Nicole works by day for a large financial institution, and spends her evening and weekends creating. This balance translates directly to Nicole's material of choice, glass. Working with glass requires a balance of applied science and creativity. Nicole applies an understanding of the physics involved in temperature control to achieve specific results. Her work is influenced by this process as well as the world around her. Her work reflects influences from details she has observe in nature, from her travels and experience in other areas such as calligraphy, book binding and fabrics.

Participating Artist - Denise Liedtka

A San Antonio native whose roots travel seven generations deep in Texas soil. Steeped in the culture and traditions, and feeling the whisper of her Cherokee lineage, Denise has always been deeply affected by her surroundings and the beauty around her. At the young age of 7, she decided to become an artist. Mentored by my artist/silversmith aunt, Madge Matcek, Denise learned Native American jewelry making and painting. While still in high school, she attended the Southwest Art and Craft Center for two years under the Tomorrow's Artist Scholarship program. She later attended North Texas State and East Texas State Universities, majoring in Fine Art.

After a successful career as an Art Director, Designer and Illustrator, Denise has shifted her focus back to fine arts. She now spends her time primarily painting and creating jewelry in fused glass, sterling silver and semi-precious stones. Denise uses the transparent medium of glass coupled with ancient materials, love of nature, and modern, elegant design aesthetics to create special treasures. Her intent is to remind you of the allure of nature and reflect the deeper beauty that is found within.

Participating Artist - Marianne Hinojosa

Marianne is a native of San Antonio, Texas, and the middle child of German immigrants who came to America after WWII. At a very young age, Marianne loved to draw. In 1990 she began painting in oil when she attended workshops taught by accomplished artist Richard Weers. Working full time for a major airline for 22 years, it wasn’t until she retired early in 2004 that she began to pursue her dream full-time.

Dogs are her favorite painting subject; she paints other animals and still life. Continuing to learn and develop as an artist, Marianne attends workshops regularly, and has been taught by other talented and successful artists such as Karen McCauley, Carol Marine, and Kaye Franklin. She has been a member of The River Art Gallery in San Antonio for 19 years and is a also a member of the Canine Art Guild and San Antonio Visual Artists (SAVA).

Participating Artist - Tamara Gabriela

Tamara Gabriela was born in Guanajuato Mexico, into a family with a long history of artists. Her jewelry is hand crafted and combines a look of sophistication and contemporary fashion. She produces magical effects by integrating ancient glass-forming methods, space-age dichroic glass, and her unique design style. The result is much more complex than standard dichroic jewelry. Her work is continually evolving, and she is featured in galleries and finer boutiques around the country.

Tamara Gabriela says her mission is to make women feel beautiful, unique, special and feminine every time they wear her creations. "jewelry can be an ornament; a gesture of love, or hold special memories, but the true significance of a piece of jewelry is the secret it keeps".

Tamara Gabriela resides in San Antonio Texas with her family.

Participating Artist - Nina "Sam" Hibler

Nina "Sam" Hibler is a full time glass artist and the flameworking Sr. Instructor for Wired Designs Studio and the Southwest School of Arts and Craft in San Antonio, Her education and experience is multifaceted. Sam majored in both art and biology receiving a Bachelor of Science from Stephen F. Austin. When she is working she draws on her knowledge as an artist, silver smith and scientist. Chemistry and physics are very helpful when melting glass. Sam's inspiration comes from nature, which can be organic, vibrant, ordered or chaotic. Movement, color and depth are very important to her in all her work. Glass is the perfect medium for Sam. Flameworking glass allows her to incorporate intricate, fluid details into her work. Working with glass she is able to capture movement and freeze it with the torch.

SAGAG General Meeting

Updates and opportunities for ART281 will be discussed at the September SAGAG general meeting. The meeting is scheduled for Thursday, September 24th at 6:30pm at the Blanco Cafe located on Blanco just inside loop 1604. After the business meeting, members will have the opportunity to share examples of their work, so bring photographs or examples you want to share.

Particpating Artist - Drita Harris

Drita Harris is the artist behind Yali by Drita. Yali is the Greek for glass and Drita is Albanian for light, giving you "glass by light". This is the perfect description of Drita's work which uses dichroic glass to transmit light and color. Drita's artistic signature are the charms she attaches to the back of each pendant instead of the traditional bail. This adds to the fun and whimsy of each piece in a unique way.

Inspired by the chaos of the universe and the diversity of human emotion Gail Stouffer's vision for most works is organic in nature. She strives to create pieces that evoke excitement, convey movement, achieve balance, and stand apart. Gail specializes in functional glassware vessels and sculpture for home décor, lighting, and architectural installations. Her work has been featured in numerous exhibitions and is installed in private collections throughout the region.

She is also the Principal Artist and Education Director at Wired Designs Studio,where her studio team teaches over thirty different workshops in hot, warm, and cold glass, metalsmithing, mixed media, and design. Gail's addiction to glass as an artistic medium has spread to her students, and there is no cure.

Particpating Artist - Kathleen McBride

In the process of exploring the hand forged arts, Kathleen McBride discovered a connection to fire and glass first through glass fusing, then lamp/torch work, and more recently kiln casting sculptures and glass blowing. The richness and purity of color through the artistic medium of glass and its combinations along with the endless possibilities to create, allows her to "feed a hungry part of my soul."

It's time to sign up for San Antonio's newest Art and Crafts event. ART281 is a one-day venue Sunday, October 11, 200. Artists are invited to display, promote and sell their art work directly to the public. This event is supported by local art organizations like, the San Antonio Glass Art Guild (SAGAG) and San Antonio Visual Artist (SAVA).
